The HAPS (History of Australia Preservation Society) Fifties Fair is an event that celebrates all things ’50’s; from architecture and clothing to 50’s design and lifestyle. This particular College brief comprised of promotional design work by designing a ‘Roll Fold’ six page brochure to promote the Fifties Fair which would be included within Time Out magazine, a major sponsor of the 50’s fair. All logos and mandatory text were provided. The design had to appeal to readers of Time Out and 50’s enthusiasts. After much exploration and conducted research into the themes, retro style, colour palettes and typefaces of the 1950’s, the style that I found most appealing was the combination of the diner/retro and vintage look so that it will appeal majorly to 50’s enthusiasts subculture that is still very much in existence today. Most vintage-style posters had simple designs consisting of a plain white or cream background with bright-coloured images that were consisted of mainly women, a large title and a small amount of text relating to the advertisement. The diner/retro look incorporates the typical signages that were once recognised outside restaurants; big, bold and attention-grabbing. Pursuing this nostalgic approach will hopefully allow modern-day readers of Time Out magazine to ponder the relaxed vibe and live entertainments that were popular during this time, therefore, enabling contemporary readers to participate in this type of enthusiastic environment once more at the Fair. The colours of the brochure are closely linked to the colour scheme of the 1950’s which are overall vibrant and bold, having the effective ability to be a prominent-looking brochure that transmits a joyful and youthful appearance for the readers to engage in witnessing the cheerfulness of the event. The brochure's connectivity via the images remains consistent across all pages and enhances the brochure's unique thematic unity. A distinguished sense of visual balance that looks captivating is established through the modern colour palette throughout the pages.
