As part of a College brief, Torrens University has decided to produce a Torrens-branded "Metro Compact Umbrella" that will be available for purchase to staff and students. It is also intended to serve as a gift to visitors such as industry speakers and guest lecturers. Torrens was in collaboration with Blunt Umbrellas to execute the product. The design idea needed to be based on the umbrella and all relating materials, including the umbrella sleeve, the packaging tube and hangtags. All materials were supplied by Torrens, such as the logo, body copy and the overall template of the collateral items mock-up. I wanted to communicate the concept of networking, connectivity and growth, and how Torrens is a University about making connections; both locally and globally. Being a connected member of Torrens already means that students and teachers are a part of the largest higher education network in the world, making a change everyday. Torrens are designed to put their students first, and very well know that everything, everyone and everywhere is a connection. The merchandise overall exudes a clean, modern, simplistic-looking, yet interconnected display for a balanced sense of professionalism and the key portrayal of a global and networking perspective for the Torrens brand. The display evokes a sense of belonging, inclusiveness and unity that are all subconsciously communicated via the formation of the lines across all the items and how they are structured in a delicate, interrelation state through the dots and squares. The effective use of white space to heighten a clearer sense of visual communication reveals a gentle essence yet simultaneously, upholds a stong quality context to represent the Torrens brand.
